Why Is After Care Important?

Once we have installed your new turf and soft landscape features, you must care for them appropriately. This will help to keep them looking brand new and inviting for longer.

The last thing you want is for your new lawn to get covered in weeds or for your plants to get eaten by pests, so we recommend that you set time aside to maintain your lawn and garden.

As time passes, you will need to do different tasks to keep your lawn healthy. Straight after a lawn has been installed, it will require more stringent care compared to once it has settled and grown for a few months.

Immediate After Care

It is important that you take precautionary steps once your lawn has been laid, to ensure that it stays well-maintained and pristine.

  • Stepping on it - avoid stepping directly onto the turf so that you don’t create impressions in the grass while it settles. If you need access to somewhere over the grass, lay planks or boards across it before walking on it.
  • Keep it moist - don’t let the edges of the new turf dry out. Either set a regular sprinkler schedule or hose it down.
  • Don’t drench it - be careful how much water you give any areas as too much moisture can cause it to rot.
  • Avoid mowing - let the grass grow for the first couple of weeks. You should leave it at least 10 days before you mow it, and when you do eventually cut the grass, make sure you don’t cut it too short to prevent discolouring and damage.
  • Keep pets off - Try to keep pets off it for at least a week to allow the turf to root into the soil, otherwise, those excited paws risk damaging it.

Once we have installed your new turf, we will provide immediate care instructions, but if you have any questions, our staff are always on hand to help. Call us on 01865 408090.

Long Term After Care

Your lawn won’t survive if you neglect it once it has been installed. So there are a few steps that you should take over the longer term to keep your lawn looking its best.

  • Fertilising - It is recommended that you fertilise your lawn at least twice a year to keep the grass healthy and growing.
  • Mow Regularly - Mow the grass at least once a week during the summer months and once every two weeks during the winter months, to encourage the roots to spread, filling gaps and blocking weeds.
  • Water Regularly - Make sure that your lawn gets some water regularly so it doesn’t dry out. But be careful not to over-water it as this can cause the roots to settle shallower and establish poorly.
  • Weed It - Weeds can spread through your lawn quickly, so try to remove them as much as possible. Where possible, try to avoid using weed killers because they don’t tackle the real problem of bad grass health. Instead, rake the grass before you cut it, as this will lift the heads of the weeds into the mower's blades.
